AI Search Engines vs Google: who Determines which Sources Matter?

In a previous blog (Why you should start with Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) today) we explained why AI is increasingly influencing how people find information. But a burning question remains: why does AI actually choose different sources than Google, and which brands benefit from this?

AI Search Engines Choose Different Sources than You’re Used To

When you search on Google, you usually see familiar names at the top: major news media, Wikipedia, strong niche websites. But AI systems like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity draw their information from a broader mix. What stands out?

  • Community platforms dominate. Reddit, Wikipedia, and YouTube are the most popular sources. Models strongly rely on user-generated content and open knowledge.
  • Surprising winners. Map platforms like Mapbox and OpenStreetMap appear remarkably often, even though you don’t typically see them in Google’s top 10.
  • Not every platform chooses the same. Google AI Mode often shows an answer with a sidebar full of different sources, while Perplexity is much closer to Google’s classic top 10. ChatGPT, on the other hand, shows less overlap.

In short: your brand is not only competing with other companies in Google, but also with communities and niche platforms that AI considers trustworthy.

Domain Authority Remains Decisive

However, there is one factor that remains standing: domains that score well in Google’s top 10 are more often cited in AI answers. This mainly concerns the domain level: the exact URL often differs, but the source does come from a domain that Google already sees as an authority.

This means that classic SEO is still the foundation. Without strong organic positions, it’s unlikely that your brand will be seriously considered in AI answers.

What Does this Mean for your Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) Strategy?

For e-commerce and B2B companies, it’s smart to refine your strategy on three points:

1. Invest in domain-wide authority

Not just one strong page, but a complete domain that scores well on multiple keywords. This increases the chance that AI will cite your site, even if it chooses a different URL.

2. Think beyond your own site

Because AI cites many community sources, it helps to be present on platforms where discussions take place. Think of niche blogs, YouTube, or even relevant Reddit threads.

3. Understand the differences per AI platform

  • AI Mode: experiments with new sources, less predictable.
  • AI Overviews & Perplexity: more overlap with Google, good chance if you already have a strong position there if your SEO is in order.
  • ChatGPT: uses broader datasets, requires more external visibility.

By understanding this, you can work specifically on visibility on the platform where your target audience searches.

GEO as a Connecting Strategy

This shift shows why Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the next step. SEO and AI findability are not separate worlds. Strong positions in Google are important, but you make the difference by making your brand citable in AI answers.
